Indianapolis Indians

Of my numerous civic engagements, including the Indianapolis Foundation, the Central Indiana Community Foundation, the English Foundation, the Capitol Improvement Board of Managers, the Crown Hill Board of Corporations, the Heritage Foundation and Tourism Tomorrow, often overlooked is my responsibilities as a member of the Board of Directors of our Indianapolis Indians.

The Indians are the triple “A” affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates and play their home games at the beautiful Victory Field in the heart of White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. The organization is regularly saluted as one of, if not the finest organizations in all of baseball.

The Indians offer an affordable family entertainment package that rivals any other of our great inventory of sporting and cultural events in Indianapolis. Not only are the Indians a great consumer value, they deliver to the economic development movement in our city. The Indians draw over 600,000 patrons each year to contribute to a healthy and vibrant business that consistently performs at a high level.
Please check out our schedule and plan a visit or two to watch great baseball and enjoy a remarkable entertainment experience. Check us out at www.IndyIndians.com.

Fourth Annual Shave-a-Thon

Please join Ben Holtzlander and his friends on May 30th (last day of school!!) at 5 p.m. for the 4th Annual Shave-a-Thon presented by Main Street Barber. Ben has been shaving his head in our backyard every May since 2010 after he was inspired by Tatum Parker's charity, Tatum's Bags of Fun (TBF). This year, the event has outgrown our yard and Main Street Barber has generously offered their shop to host a great event for the whole family. There will be hot dogs, beverages, music and shaved ice. Please check out the website and sponsor Ben's shave by clicking on his name and donating!

TBF provides backpacks full of awesome age-appropriate toys and gifts to children in Indiana who have been diagnosed with cancer. Over the past three years, Ben and his friends have raised over $9,000.00 to help bring smiles and hope to kids battling cancer.

Ben and our family would love to see everyone come out to support Ben and celebrate the start of summer as he shaves his head once again! Hope to see you there - but if you can't be there in person, Ben would love to still have your support!

Defense Research Institute's Sexual Torts Seminar

Our firm's primary focus is the defense of civil claims against medical providers and other professionals. In that context we encounter a number of challenging claims that call into question the competent execution of our clients' professional expertise. Such claims are understandably upsetting for our clients.

Imagine, then, when such claims are coupled with allegations of improper sexual conduct or contact. Unfortunately, our country is facing what seems to be a surge of such claims. Medical professionals and organizations, along with your organizations, religious institutions, schools and colleges, have been subject to scrutiny for alleged sexual misconduct by agents or employees directed against vulnerable victims. The archetypal case in more recent headlines is the Penn State scandal.

Our system of justice provides that even those accused of reprehensible conduct, and their employers, are entitled to civil and criminal defense. I am currently serving as Program Chair for the Defense Research Institute's Sexual Torts seminar, to be held in San Diego on November 13-15, 2013. That seminar is jointly sponsored by the DRI's Medical Liability Committee, the Employment Law Committee, and the Insurance Law Committee. The focus of the seminar is the defense of claims against institutions premised on the alleged sexual misconduct of agents or employees.

I am very excited about this seminar. We have recruited a variety of speakers from across the country, including experienced trial lawyers, corporate and insurance in-house representatives, a well-known victim's advocate, and Mark Geragos, the well-known criminal defense attorney who has represented, among others, Michael Jackson and Scott Peterson.

Our firm remains deeply involved in DRI activities. Involvement in an organization like DRI really defines what we find most enjoyable about practicing law: Sharing contacts and ideas with professional colleagues and clients in a setting that also incorporates opportunities for recreational activities.
