Dog Town

My husband and I recently took a vacation to the Grand Canyon. After thoroughly exploring the Canyon, we headed up to Kanab, Utah to volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Society. I've been a member of Best Friends ever since I saw the show "Dog Town" on National Geographic. Best Friends has about 3,000 acres in the Red Rock Canyons of southern Utah. It offers a home for life for dogs, cats, pigs, bunnies, birds and horses. They've taken in some famous strays including the Michael Vic dogs and hurricane Katrina dogs. We spent our time volunteering by walking dogs, feeding them, sweeping and mopping out cages, and spending time with dogs who needed a little one-on-one time. We even did two sleepovers with dogs who needed to see what it was like to live in a house (and of course sleep in a bed). Although it was hard work, it was truly a rewarding experience and not terribly heart-breaking since we know that every animal there has a wonderful home for life, even if they never get adopted. I encourage you to check out Best Friends at www.bestfriends.org and see how you can join in the fight to create a world of No More Homeless Pets.

Senate Bill No. 88 - Attorney's Fees

The Indiana Senate is considering a bill which would require a court to award attorney's fees to the prevailing party in all civil actions. The "American Rule" has always been that each side pays their own attorney's fees, unless otherwise provided by statute. While many defense lawyers have expressed significant concern over the bill, it seems to me that it might actually be a benefit. The threat of attorney's fees in all civil actions might cause plaintiffs to think long and hard before filing a questionable Complaint. While this may result in fewer lawsuits, and therefore less work for the Defense Bar, we as defense attorneys should be happy as the real focus should be on the outcome for our clients - not ourselves.

Who's got it better than us?

2/4/13
The Harbaugh brothers that have been so successful in pro football coaching the two seasons have explained that their positive outlook on life is embodied by a question frequently asked by their parents. That question is, "Who's got it better than us?" And their family's refrain was always, "Nobody's got it better than us!!"

At Bleeke Dillon Crandall, we sincerely feel the same way about what we are privileged to do for our clients. Many lawyers have thankless jobs and clients who are seldom happy with the resolution of their cases, or who complain about the cost of their attorney fees. Instead, we are blessed to represent doctors, nurses and other clients who care deeply about their cases, because it is truly about more than just money. Our clients also are intelligent and truly appreciative of the work we do for them. And we consider our clients to be good friends, as well. We frequently remind ourselves, that among the many roles we could serve as attorneys, at Bleeke Dillon Crandall, "Nobody's got it better than us!!"
